Our mission is to make our highways and roads safer. Passive and active restraints, energy absorbing structures, and driver assist technologies have significantly reduced motor vehicle fatalities. However, drivers and other road users are vulnerable to injury when involved in a collision with a semitrailer as a the body of a passenger vehicle can pass beneath the body of a trailer and the passenger compartment can directly contact the trailer body. The results of an underride are often deadly.
I'm a consulting engineer with Accident Research Specialists in Cary, NC. My work is focused on motor vehicle accident reconstruction. In 2015 I founded Collision Safety Consulting to develop truck and trailer guards. Paul Hutson, a mechanical engineering student at ECU and a good friend, has been involved on this project since the beginning, and he has assisted in all phases of the design and testing while Matt Suffern has provided design expertise.
This grassroots effort has had success so far in prototyping and testing lightweight rear and side guards that rely on existing trailer structure. Thanks to my wife, family, friends, industry advocates, and suppliers who have donated time, energy, expertise, and materials to make this project a reality.
