When a passenger vehicle underrides (passes underneath) a commercial vehicle, the results are often catastrophic.
ENHANCING TRUCK SAFETY
Our mission is to make our highways and roads safer. Passive and active restraints, energy absorbing structures, and driver assist technologies have significantly reduced motor vehicle fatalities. However, drivers and other road users are vulnerable to injury when involved in a collision with a semitrailer as a the body of a passenger vehicle can pass beneath the body of a trailer and the passenger compartment can directly contact the trailer body. The results of an underride are often deadly.
I'm a consulting engineer with Accident Research Specialists in Cary, NC. My work is focused on motor vehicle accident reconstruction. In 2015 I founded Collision Safety Consulting in Morrisville, NC to develop truck and trailer guards.
My co-inventor, Paul Hutson, pased away unexepectedly last week at the age of 28. He was a great friend and determined engineer who donated hundreds (if not thousands) of hours to designing and building underride guards to make our highways safer. Paul, you are remembered and you are missed.
